August Summer Stroll – Pole to Pole

Not Quite Michael Palin but it is Pole to Pole!!!

The penultimate ‘Summer Stroll” in this year’s series of short monthly walks organised by Oldham Community Radio 99.7fm follows (sort of) in the footsteps that intrepid modern day Traveller – Michael Palin. If you remember the TV series he journeyed from the North Pole to the South Pole taking many months and visiting loads of exotic places en route.

Intrepid walk leader Gerald Brierley explained that Oldham Community Radio’s “Summer Strollers” didn’t quite have that much time, and certainly not the budget, for such a journey but would still like to travel “Pole to Pole”!

Consequently they’ve come up with a wonderful idea that ties in nicely with this years “Rochdale Canal Festival” (13th to 28th August). They are going to walk the Rochdale Canal from Failsworth Pole to …….. Failsworth Pole??

They met on Thursday 25th August at 12 noon at Failsworth Pole and set off along the canal in the direction of Manchester for a walk of about and hour and fifteen minutes duration, or until they feel they’ve gone far enough. Then they turned round and walked back to Failsworth Pole!

There you have it “Pole to Pole!!”

Gerald explained, “The Rochdale Canal is now such a really nice environment and many people will be surprised at how pleasant the walk has become. Consequently, as we couldn’t find a ‘countryside route’ back to Failsworth Pole through fields we decided to just retrace our steps back along the canal. Anyway, things always look different from the other side!”
