About Ali O'Brien

Ali Presents the "Sounds of Folk" show, which is broadcast on Mondays from 7 to 8pm, and repeated again on Fridays (7-8pm), with producer Bernard Cromarty. Bernard has been involved with folk music since the late 1960s, and was a member of the song group and ceilidh band 'Haywain' for over 20 years. Currently he is Chief Musician with the Earl of Stamford Morris, a 'resident' at Lymm Folk Club (Thursdays), and the Open Door Folk Club at the Royal Oak, Werneth (Sundays). Bernard is the producer for Ali O'Brien's 'Sounds of Folk' on Oldham Community Radio, as he was when the programme was on BBC GMR, and is also the programme's producer and recording engineer on internet based Radio Britfolk.

The programme is a celebration of the diversity of folk music, song, poetry and dance in the greater Oldham area, with music from local, national and international artists. The programme also includes interviews and live performances from local artists and artists visiting the area, plus information on local events taking place in folk clubs and festivals. Please try to keep us as up-to-date as possible with your diary dates, and let us know if we announce the wrong information - we keep an eye on the phone lines!

Ali has been involved in folk music for over 30 years, and first sang solo in the Cross Keys Folk Club in Uppermill, where she later became the resident host. Her first love is traditional, unaccompanied music, but Sounds of Folk represents the whole range of folk music. In 1998 she joined the Saddleworth Folk Festival committee as Vice Chair, taking the position of Chair from the 2nd Festival. From 2002 she has been the Director of the Festival. Ali has presented Sounds of Folk for over 5 years, initially for BBC GMR, then for Radio BritFolk, and now for Oldham Community radio, which is great as she lives in the Saddleworth area of the town.
